Greene Devils vs. Fighting Cyclones — TSSAA Region 1-4A

Friday, October 30, 2026 — 7:30 PM

Elizabethton High School, Elizabethton, Tennessee

Greeneville (9-0, 6-0 Region 1-4A) at Elizabethton (6-3, 5-1 Region 1-4A)

Greeneville head coach: Eddie Spradlen | Elizabethton head coach: Shawn Witten

Why This Game Matters

Greeneville can finish the job. A win at Elizabethton makes the Greene Devils the outright Region 1-4A champions and completes a perfect regular season. Elizabethton can still spoil both — a Cyclone win throws the region race into a tie at the top and hands Greeneville its first loss of the year.

It is also a rivalry game in the truest sense. Greeneville coach Eddie Spradlen said it plainly this week: “Two schools and communities who really support their programs. We are going on the road to a tough place and we are going to have to play good football.”

Greeneville arrives as the team to beat in Class 4A. The Devils went 12-2 a year ago, one game short of the state championship game, and have not lost since. Elizabethton arrives angry — the Cyclones led late at Seymour last week before two fourth-quarter touchdowns turned a win into a 21-16 loss.

Last Week

• Greeneville 56, Grainger 7. Taren Claridy caught six touchdown passes — a new single-game school record — as the Devils rolled to 56-0 before Grainger scored in the fourth.

• Seymour 21, Elizabethton 16. The Cyclones dropped to 5-1 in region play after Seymour scored twice in the fourth quarter.

Players to Watch

• Kaine Ricker, Greeneville QB. The senior won the starting job out of a four-man offseason battle and has not looked back: 2,125 passing yards, 26 touchdowns and no interceptions through Week 9, then 10-for-13 for 230 yards against Grainger.

• Taren Claridy, Greeneville WR. Already the school's single-season receiving record holder (1,265 yards through Week 9), he added six touchdown catches against Grainger for 26 receiving scores on the season.

• Kase Spradlen, Greeneville QB. The backup went 7-for-7 for 66 yards and a score in relief against Grainger, and ran for a touchdown of his own.

• William Bowers, Elizabethton K. Four field goals with a long of 49, plus 31 extra points through Week 9 — a real weapon if this one stays close.

Keys to the Game

• Can anyone cover Claridy? Six touchdown catches in one game is not a typo. Elizabethton's secondary has to find him on every snap — and Greeneville's offensive line, which Spradlen praised all season, has given Ricker the time to find him.

• The Elizabethton crowd. Claridy himself flagged it: “It's going to be loud and rowdy up there so we just have to stay focused and stay ready and trust the coaches' game plan.” A fast Cyclone start could turn that crowd into a factor.

• Finish drives. Elizabethton led Seymour late and could not close. Against an offense averaging what Greeneville's has, field goals instead of touchdowns will not be enough.

• The kicking game. If this one tightens up in the fourth quarter, Bowers' leg (long of 49) gives Elizabethton a chance to steal it late.

The Bigger Picture

Greeneville's path is simple: win and the region title is outright, the regular season is perfect, and the playoff road runs through Greeneville. Elizabethton's path is spoiler with a prize — a win keeps the Cyclones in the region title conversation and sends them into the playoffs with the biggest win of their season.

One more wrinkle: even if Elizabethton pulls the upset, Greeneville could still finish as the region's No. 1 seed if Seymour beats Grainger. But the Devils are not thinking about tiebreakers. As Spradlen put it, they want “to be playing the best football we have played all year” — and Friday night in Elizabethton is the test.

Records, results and quotes verified from MaxPreps schedules and GreeneSportsZone game coverage through Week 10. Elizabethton's losses this season: Science Hill 34-20, Tennessee High 20-17, Seymour 21-16. Greeneville's 2025 finish: 12-2, one game short of the state title game.
